The beach alone is great for anyone looking to plan something unique. Sunsets this time of the year are perfect! The Saints are in the Super Bowl! A great Super Bowl is ahead. Two great quarterbacks will try to lead their team to a win. Steelers Coach Woody Widenhofer has been to the Super Bowl four times! Widenhofer predicts the Colts will be victorious but, his heart cheers for the Saints. Military testing may save our beaches! Oil drilling is a topic in the White House. The United States Government is looking to increase oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. There are many people that live in Northwest Florida that do not support drilling. Eglin Air Force Base frequently does testing over gulf waters. Oil drilling may interfere with military testing which, would keep oil rigs away. The New Florida Girl retires. After 40 years of fishing, the New Florida Girl will remain in the Destin Harbor. The captain of the popular charter boat doesn't want to sell the boat. There are plans to keep the boat alive at the docks. The boat may become a classroom for young fishermen to learn about marine biology and oceanography. Cold temperatures in January harm marine life. Last month Florida experienced record temperatures. The cold was not only costly to humans but, marine life suffered as well. Many fish were killed from the cold temperatures. Haiti has been a headline since the devastating earthquake. People from around the world have stepped up to help Haitians. Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City is playing a major role in the relief efforts. Tyndall's Air Operations Center is directing traffic for all flights to Haiti. There's an average of 150 flights a day coming in. That number is three times the normal flight schedule! Gulf of Mexico chills down! After a cold blast just weeks ago, the Gulf of Mexico is currently in the low 50's along the coast. Temperatures in the 50's are normal for places like Monterey, California. Temperatures have warmed up during the day. Expect water temperatures to gradually warm up. Wetsuits are needed now to avoid hypothermia. Snowbird count is up. Last year the snowbirds did not come in flocks. In 2010, they certainly have! Snowbirds can be seen walking along Old 98 every morning! Business is surely up in South Walton County. Business is up by as much as 60 percent compared to last year. Snowbirds generally roost till March. Chan's Wine World expands eastward! Chan's Wine World will open a new location in February on 30-A. The new location will be at the WaterColor Town Center where Hot and Cold was once located. Chan's Wine World offers a great selection of beer, liquor and wine. Ghosthunters coming to Pensacola! Pensacola is known for being one of the oldest cities in the United States. With history comes hauntings. The Pensacola Lighthouse has had much attention. Ghost Seekers of Texas will be returning to the supposedly haunted lighthouse Jan. 29-31. The public is welcome to be part of the hunt. Tickets are $15. For more information visit www.ghostseekersoftexas.com No oil drilling in the gulf! The Emerald Coast is coming together to keep the beaches white and not black. Oil drilling off the Emerald Coast could threaten local waters. Some Of The News Covered:New Year's Eve was chilly! Ringing in 2010 wasn't much different than 2009. Both evenings were quite chilly. Places like the Baytowne Wharf, Nightown and The HarborWalk had great crowds! HarborWalk had a nice fireworks display as the clock struck 12. Gumbo and wings coming! The Great Southern Gumbo and Wing Ding Championship will take place Saturday January 16th from 11 till 3 p.m. at The Market Shops at Sandestin. Area restaurants will compete for bragging rights for the best gumbo and wings! Tickets will be $15 in advance and $25 the day of. Visit www.sandestin.com/gumbowingding for details. Music festival coming to 30-A! The 30-A Songwriter's Festival will have its first year on the beaches along 30-A. From January 15th till the 17th the festival will take place all along the scenic route. The music festival will include Emily Sailers of the Indigo Girls, Gary Louris of the Jayhawks, Shawn Mullins, Matthew Sweet, Chely Wright, Jeffrey Steele and Jessi Alexander. The festival had more offers to participate but, could not accept them all. Sharks coming to Okaloosa Island. The Humane Society plans to educate the public on Okaloosa Island about sharks and the protection they need. Shark fishing tournaments have taken place on the Emerald Coast and part of the event is to create awareness about shark fishing and its damage to shark populations. The event will also include national speakers, high-quality documentaries and independent films. The event will take place at the Okaloosa Island Convention Center but, a set date is to be determined. The Emerald Coast is cold! Much of Florida is experiencing the coldest temperatures in years. At night the low is expected to be in the 20's for the Emerald Coast for about 10 days straight. The water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico is NOT warm! A wetsuit will be needed for anyone who ventures in. No one knows how long the cold will last. For those making vacation plans be sure to follow The Weather Channel. Coffee in Rosemary Beach. Amavida Coffee offers some great coffee to anyone visiting beautiful Rosemary Beach. The coffee shop has a modern and relaxing vibe. Many people are traveling the week of Christmas. The Emerald Coast will feel busy like spring break for about a week. Visitors can expect increased traffic and busy stores the week of Christmas. Many people come to the Emerald Coast to experience Florida's white Christmas. Wal-Mart is coming to South Walton! A Wal-Mart Supercenter will be part of a new development in South Walton County that will be located on the northwest corner of Hwy 98 and West Hewett Road. Next to the Wal-Mart will be the Topsail West development. The St. Joe Company has designated 116 acres for the development. Topsail West will include 308,000 square feet of retail space, 5,000 square feet of office space, 190 senior-living units, 110 assisted-living units and 310 multi-family units. 2020 is the completion date of all phases. Spring break back on Panama City's mind! Not long ago Panama City Tourist Development Council voted against funding marketing campaigns with MTV. Now, the TDC is reconsidering. The TDC will give a co-operative $25,000 to local hotels and restaurants for efforts to attract spring breakers. Spring breakers will get discounted food and lodging incentives. Congratulations Reed Waddle! Reed Waddle is a popular musician along the Emerald Coast. Recently, Waddle was recognized for winning the Grand Prize at the New York Songwriter's Circle. The song, "Piece By Piece" impressed the panel of blue ribbon judges. Snowbirds are coming! The snowbird season has begun. The Destin Snowbirds recently had a Roost and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. This year there are 176 members. In 2008, the number was slightly higher with 186 members. Snowbird season does not peak till January. Snowbirds come each year from areas up north such as, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Zoo is saved! The Gulf Breeze closed only to reopen! Eric Mogensen, owner of Virginia Safari Park purchased The Gulf Breeze Zoo. The zoo was open for 25 years, but closed in August this year after local governments would not support the facility. Along with an increase in weather, there will be an increase in waves. Surline has predicted that the panhandle of Florida is a good bet for surf for the month of December. Christiano's is now open in the old Gugliemo's location on Hwy 98 in South Walton County. The Italian restaurant is Chris Chirium's first restaurant! Chirium was once a chef at the Elephant Walk. The classically-trained French chef has good resume of italian experience and everyone is welcome for dinner Monday through Friday 5-9 p.m. Southwest has flights! Southwest Airlines has announced its flights for the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. Travelers from Baltimore, Houston, Nashville, Orlando and Washington D.C. will have direct flights to the Emerald Coast! Thanksgiving Day was blessed with sunny skies, a nice breeze and temperatures in 60's. The Emerald Coast is destination growing in popularity for celebrating the holidays! Traffic on the roads and in stores was surely up! Some businesses were open on Thanksgiving Day. Harbor Docks was one of the few. Baby J's and Pat O'briens are both closed. Baby J's closure is due to the vessel being moved to either Louisiana or Mississippi. The owners are now looking for a new location to reopen the once popular harbor hang out. Pat O'briens closure is due to the business not fitting into the family vision of HarborWalk Village. A Mexican cantina themed restaurant will take its place. Winter weather is being felt! Florida is known for having warm temperatures. The winter months can get chilly. Snowbirds and holiday season visitors can plan their visit by paying attention to The Weather Channel. Temperatures along the Emerald Coast will normally warm up before an approaching cold front. Once the front passes, dramatic temperature drops follow. Parallel parking coming to Old Hwy 98. Walton County Commissioners approved a bid for $860,000 from Utility Solutions to install about 100 parallel parking spaces. The spaces will be put in starting from Whale's Tail westward to Sea Cabins town homes. Construction should begin in the next 30 days. Holiday Isle will not see sand! The East Pass will be getting dredged soon. The sand will stay west of the Marler(Destin) Bridge due to an Inlet Management Plan. Even though Holiday Isle is in desperation for sand the homeowners on Okaloosa Island will still get all the sand due to the IMP. Speeders will get tickets in Destin! A grant has been given from the Department of Law Enforcement. The $75,000 will pay for roughly 2,700 hours of traffic enforcement. Traffic enforcement will be in residential areas along with Hwy 98. The Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport is undergoing a $78 million expansion. Great concerts coming up! The Swamp on Okaloosa Island will host two great concerts coming up. On Wednesday November 18th Jet will be live. December 4th the Swamp will host The All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday and Anberlin!!!!! Tickets are now on sale! Panama City will see sand soon! Panama City Tourist Development Council is moving forward with permits for beach restoration. Two sites in the Gulf of Mexico offer sand that will be favorable for the beaches. Shell Island and off the beaches of Thomas Drive are the two sites. The 3rd penny in the bed tax is used for beach renourishment in Panama City. Dune lakes in Walton County are rare in the world. Walton County has 15 lakes that happen to be globally rare. Only on the coast of Oregon and New Zealand are there dune lakes. The lakes support both fresh and salt water marinelife that creates a unique ecosystem. The Coastal Dune Lake Advisory Board is putting forth effort to protect the dune lakes. Two cold fronts have passed and took the warm temperatures with them. With the cooler air temperatures is also cooler water temps. The water temperature along the beaches is in the upper 70's. Expect that to drop more with each passing cold front. The Mullet Festival was a great time! As always the Mullet Festival had a great turnout to make it a great time! Country singers melted hearts and gained new fans! With the good amount of food, beer and music was the cool weather. The Mullet Festival takes place in October just in time for the first cold fronts. The Pensacola Arts Festival is almost here! The festival many locals look forward to attending is just two weeks away! The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival will take place from November 6th till the 8th at Seville Square in downtown Pensacola. The festival has many great displays of art for buyers and browsers. Its a great event for everyone! Thomas Doughnuts are the best! Located along Front Beach Road in Panama City Beach is Thomas Doughnuts. The local eatery is known for possibly the best doughnut. Other breakfast items are served as well. The location has been around for a long time and still keeps the old time feel by the beach. Halloween on the Emerald Coast! Halloween is fun and exciting for both adults and kids. Many local bars have costume parties and contests. Expect places like Club Aqua and Nightown to be packed! Places like the Destin commons and other shopping malls will offer a trick-or-treat for kids. Some neighborhoods have better opportunities for trick-or-treaters than others. Southwest Airlines is coming to Panama City! The area airports were all competing for Southwest Airlines as their low fare carrier. The decision has been made for Southwest Airlines to fly out of Panama City's new international airport. The new airport will open in May of 2010 just in time for summer! For two weeks the beaches, restaurants and roads will seem like summer again. Restaurants like Pompano Joe's have been on a wait every evening. Many schools still have a fall break. Also, October is the month many homeowners have to attend homeowner's association meetings. Art is back in Destin! The 14th Annual Destin Festival of the Arts will take place Saturday October the 24th at the Henderson Beach State Park. From 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. festival goers will be able to see art displays by 100 artists. The artists in the festival will be competing for $8,200 in cash rewards! The Mullet is back! The Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival is back for it's 33rd year! The festival takes place in Niceville. The festival will have arts and crafts, food vendors and lots of mullet. Along with the mullet is some great country music. Friday night Chuck Wicks will be live in concert followed by Blake Shelton on Saturday night and Billy Ray Cyrus Sunday afternoon. The festival always brings in a crowd! The sun is setting on the gulf once again! The beautiful sunsets of the Emerald Coast can now be observed at the beach. There are many great viewing points for watching the sunset. Restaurants like Bud and Alley's, Pompano Joe's, Harry T's and Angler's are great options for the site. The sun is now setting around 6:30. It is recommended to arrive an hour early to get a good viewing point. Walton County residents may get beach access. The beaches of South Walton County allow vehicles to drive on the beach that have beach permits. Only property owners or a person holding controlling interest in a business can optain beach permits. Family members of property owners are also elligible. Residents may have access soon. Residents would be required to register for voting in order to get a beach permit. Helen Back heads to Navarre! Helen Back has become known for a great place to hang out on a local and national scale. The popular bar is spreading its roots to Navarre. The new location will be on the water where the Beach World retail store was located. The Helen Back location west of Hurlburt Field Air Force Base will close. The 32nd Annual Pensacola Seafood Festival will take place in downtown Pensacola at Seville Square Sept. 25-27. More than 175 vendors will be present. Lots of arts, crafts and music will be part of the festival. The festival is free to the public! Destin Seafood Festival is coming! The 31st Annual Destin Seafood Festival will take place Oct. 2-4 at the HarborWalk Village. Lots of great seafood, arts and crafts booths and music will be there! Friday night Survivor will take the stage. Saturday Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform. The daily cost to attend the festival is $5. Okaloosa County is trying to land Southwest! Southwest Airlines is looking to choose an area airport. Bay County's new airport is working hard to attract the carrier with the backing of the St. Joe Company offering $10 million. With Okaloosa County being in the middle it could bring in business from both Bay and Escambia County. The Walton County Tourist Development Council is not backing any airport until Southwest has chosen an airport. Fishing is getting good! Recently, sailfish were spotted from the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier. The sailfish along with king mackerel could be seen feeding at the end of the pier. Flounder and redfish are both being caught heavily by anglers. The Destin Fishing Rodeo begins in October! The Whales Tail is open! The Whales Tail caught fire in the spring of this year. The upstairs restaurant is still closed, but the beach bar is open for business. Pompano Joe's now has a front deck that offers live music nightly along with a tiki bar. The new deck also offers a great viewing point for the amazing sunsets to come! The Navarre Pass may have a chance! In 1965 the Navarre Pass was opened. Two months later it was filled in by Hurricane Betsy. The pass may open now. The military has set back any developments due to the training ranges in the gulf. Santa Rosa County voted to approve an amended version of the Tri-County Joint Land-Use Study to remove wording that recommended no new waterways leading to the Gulf of Mexico.
