There will be two daily flights that are non-stop to Dulles in Washington D.C. There will be one flight to Chicago on Saturday and Sunday only from February 13th till June 6th. The Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport is undergoing a $78 million expansion. Great concerts coming up! The Swamp on Okaloosa Island will host two great concerts coming up. On Wednesday November 18th Jet will be live. December 4th the Swamp will host The All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday and Anberlin!!!!! Tickets are now on sale! Panama City will see sand soon! Panama City Tourist Development Council is moving forward with permits for beach restoration. Two sites in the Gulf of Mexico offer sand that will be favorable for the beaches. Shell Island and off the beaches of Thomas Drive are the two sites. The 3rd penny in the bed tax is used for beach renourishment in Panama City. Dune lakes in Walton County are rare in the world. Walton County has 15 lakes that happen to be globally rare. Only on the coast of Oregon and New Zealand are there dune lakes. The lakes support both fresh and salt water marinelife that creates a unique ecosystem. The Coastal Dune Lake Advisory Board is putting forth effort to protect the dune lakes. Two cold fronts have passed and took the warm temperatures with them. With the cooler air temperatures is also cooler water temps. The water temperature along the beaches is in the upper 70's. Expect that to drop more with each passing cold front. The Mullet Festival was a great time! As always the Mullet Festival had a great turnout to make it a great time! Country singers melted hearts and gained new fans! With the good amount of food, beer and music was the cool weather. The Mullet Festival takes place in October just in time for the first cold fronts. The Pensacola Arts Festival is almost here! The festival many locals look forward to attending is just two weeks away! The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival will take place from November 6th till the 8th at Seville Square in downtown Pensacola. The festival has many great displays of art for buyers and browsers. Its a great event for everyone! Thomas Doughnuts are the best! Located along Front Beach Road in Panama City Beach is Thomas Doughnuts. The local eatery is known for possibly the best doughnut. Other breakfast items are served as well. The location has been around for a long time and still keeps the old time feel by the beach. Halloween on the Emerald Coast! Halloween is fun and exciting for both adults and kids. Many local bars have costume parties and contests. Expect places like Club Aqua and Nightown to be packed! Places like the Destin commons and other shopping malls will offer a trick-or-treat for kids. Some neighborhoods have better opportunities for trick-or-treaters than others. Southwest Airlines is coming to Panama City! The area airports were all competing for Southwest Airlines as their low fare carrier. The decision has been made for Southwest Airlines to fly out of Panama City's new international airport. The new airport will open in May of 2010 just in time for summer! For two weeks the beaches, restaurants and roads will seem like summer again. Restaurants like Pompano Joe's have been on a wait every evening. Many schools still have a fall break. Also, October is the month many homeowners have to attend homeowner's association meetings. Art is back in Destin! The 14th Annual Destin Festival of the Arts will take place Saturday October the 24th at the Henderson Beach State Park. From 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. festival goers will be able to see art displays by 100 artists. The artists in the festival will be competing for $8,200 in cash rewards! The Mullet is back! The Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival is back for it's 33rd year! The festival takes place in Niceville. The festival will have arts and crafts, food vendors and lots of mullet. Along with the mullet is some great country music. Friday night Chuck Wicks will be live in concert followed by Blake Shelton on Saturday night and Billy Ray Cyrus Sunday afternoon. The festival always brings in a crowd! The sun is setting on the gulf once again! The beautiful sunsets of the Emerald Coast can now be observed at the beach. There are many great viewing points for watching the sunset. Restaurants like Bud and Alley's, Pompano Joe's, Harry T's and Angler's are great options for the site. The sun is now setting around 6:30. It is recommended to arrive an hour early to get a good viewing point. Walton County residents may get beach access. The beaches of South Walton County allow vehicles to drive on the beach that have beach permits. Only property owners or a person holding controlling interest in a business can optain beach permits. Family members of property owners are also elligible. Residents may have access soon. Residents would be required to register for voting in order to get a beach permit. Helen Back heads to Navarre! Helen Back has become known for a great place to hang out on a local and national scale. The popular bar is spreading its roots to Navarre. The new location will be on the water where the Beach World retail store was located. The Helen Back location west of Hurlburt Field Air Force Base will close. The 32nd Annual Pensacola Seafood Festival will take place in downtown Pensacola at Seville Square Sept. 25-27. More than 175 vendors will be present. Lots of arts, crafts and music will be part of the festival. The festival is free to the public! Destin Seafood Festival is coming! The 31st Annual Destin Seafood Festival will take place Oct. 2-4 at the HarborWalk Village. Lots of great seafood, arts and crafts booths and music will be there! Friday night Survivor will take the stage. Saturday Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform. The daily cost to attend the festival is $5. Okaloosa County is trying to land Southwest! Southwest Airlines is looking to choose an area airport. Bay County's new airport is working hard to attract the carrier with the backing of the St. Joe Company offering $10 million. With Okaloosa County being in the middle it could bring in business from both Bay and Escambia County. The Walton County Tourist Development Council is not backing any airport until Southwest has chosen an airport. Fishing is getting good! Recently, sailfish were spotted from the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier. The sailfish along with king mackerel could be seen feeding at the end of the pier. Flounder and redfish are both being caught heavily by anglers. The Destin Fishing Rodeo begins in October! The Whales Tail is open! The Whales Tail caught fire in the spring of this year. The upstairs restaurant is still closed, but the beach bar is open for business. Pompano Joe's now has a front deck that offers live music nightly along with a tiki bar. The new deck also offers a great viewing point for the amazing sunsets to come! The Navarre Pass may have a chance! In 1965 the Navarre Pass was opened. Two months later it was filled in by Hurricane Betsy. The pass may open now. The military has set back any developments due to the training ranges in the gulf. Santa Rosa County voted to approve an amended version of the Tri-County Joint Land-Use Study to remove wording that recommended no new waterways leading to the Gulf of Mexico. The Emerald Coast had many visitors for the holiday weekend. Everywhere along the beach seemed to be busy with people soaking up the last getaway for the summer. Crab Island had a large turnout as always. The beaches were by no means desolate. Restaurants and bars stayed very busy when the beaches cleared for the evening. A great holiday weekend overall! The waters have cleared! The beaches along the Emerald Coast seem free of june grass! The water temperature is in the low 80's. There are some jellyfish present, but the "jellies" are large and easy to spot. Some high surf is expected in the next 5 days and beachgoers should exercise high caution. Destin may have ownership of Norriego Point. Okaloosa County currently owns Norriego Point. The City of Destin wants full control of Norriego to do more repairs. In the past 20 years some 600,000 cubic yards of sand has drifted away. Destin officials are planning to buffer up Norriego Point with a project that will cost between $5.5 and $7.2 million. The project will slow erosion and preserve Norriego Point as a recreational area. Traffic violators will pay more! A new state law went into effect that allows counties to double a $15 surcharge on traffic violations to help cover rising court costs. When traveling to the Emerald Coast, drivers should always do the speed limit. Much of US Hwy 98 is patrolled heavily by police, and the speed limit is strictly enforced. The waters between the Santa Rosa Sound and the Choctawhatchee Bay were areas of high boat traffic. There were some big names out on the water such as, Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes! Rip currents are very dangerous! The past couple of weeks the Emerald Coast has seen some high surf and some dangerous rip currents! Some swimmers were saved from the dangerous waters on the Okaloosa Island. When red flags are flying beachgoers need to be aware that swimming in the Gulf of Mexico can be dangerous. Tropical Storm Claudette was not a threat. Many visitors to the Emerald Coast packed up early because of Tropical Storm Claudette. The tropical storm brought some big surf, heavy showers and some wind to the Emerald Coast. The storm left as quick as it developed. The Emerald Coast is back to its sunny ways! Big sharks in the Gulf of Mexico! A whale shark and a great white shark were both spotted recently. The whale shark was just off the coast of Destin beaches. The great white was spotted 40 miles off the coast of Orange Beach, Al. There are no gates to the Gulf of Mexico, and large marine species are not out of the question! Leave No Trace in Bay County. Bay County may be adopting a Leave No Trace ordinance that will allow the county to discard of objects left on the beach. Unlike Walton County, Bay County might fine beachgoers for leaving their things behind on the beach. Objects left on the beach make it hard for the beach tractor to clean the beach. The Blue Angels always put on a spectacular show and attract a large crowd. The recent show had a turnout of more than 210,000 spectators! More great events are still to come in Pensacola. Business is good at the Harbor Walk. The Harbor Walk Village has become a popular attraction. Some locals still are not happy with such a large development on the harbor. There are many people that like the excitement that is now on the harbor! Lots of visitors can be seen strolling the docks. The Emerald Coast attracts new visitors each year. Many of the new visitors have made Destin the new vacation destination. 399 is open! The road that connects Navarre Beach to Pensacola Beach is now open. The beach is still quiet and beautiful. The beach is crowdless. Most of the dunes that were once present are now just flat sand. Some debris can be seen mixed in with the sand from the destruction of the storms in 2004 and 2005. The Destin Life Center is open! The Destin United Methodist Church opened the Destin Life Center to be an outreach to bring people to Christ. The Church felt a need in the community for the Life Center. The Life Center has a gymnasium, weight room, conference rooms and a cafe. A height ordinance coming to Walton County. In South Walton County building heights may get a cap of 50 feet. A countywide height ordinance may go into effect setting height limits for residential, commercial and industrial zones. The north part of the county may be more flexible and allow more. The Fishing Rights Alliance has filed suit against the National Marine Fisheries Service. The FRA hopes to loosen fishing restrictions on grouper and red snapper. Over the past two years bag limits and fishing seasons have gotten tighter. The City of Destin has spent a lot of money trying to keep sand out of the harbor. Much of the sand that builds up in the harbor is from the erosion of Norriego Point. The Destin City Council is thinking of spending $7.5 million to armor Norriego Point with either rocks or metal sheets. Erosion is a long-term problem and the city is thinking of a long-term solution. Pensacola is rich with history! Recently, a stone cannon ball, a bright green ceramic dish piece and a chicken bone were recovered from a shipwreck in the Pensacola Bay. For the past three years University of West Florida students have been recovering artifacts from the Emanuel Point II. The ship is part of a fleet that was commanded by Pensacola's founder, Don Tristan de Luna. The Panama City International Airport is on schedule. With 10 months to go, the Panama City International Airport is 61 percent complete. Many residents along the Emerald Coast are anticipating the airport's completion. The airport has encountered obstacles with the Federal Avaition Administration and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The Pensacola International Billfish Tournament saw fewer competitors. For 2009, there was only 45 boats that competed in the fishing tournament. The economy has affected a lot fishing from Panama City to Pensacola. In 2007, the Pensacola fishing tournament had aound 90 boats competing for the trophy billfish. Many boat captains are having to include gas prices and traveling into thier fishing strategy. Leave No Trace is Walton County's new ordinance. Many beachgoers leave behind tents, chairs and other objects on the beach. The items were once tagged to remind property owners to take items with them off the beach. Walton County passed a new ordinance called Leave No Trace. Objects left on the beach will be tagged and given 24 hours to be removed. The beaches, bars, restaurant and waters were busy! For 2009, there was a lot of firework displays! Many locals were impressed with the displays. After the fireworks, many people went to the beach to shoot off their own display. MTV Cribs was on the Emerald Coast! During spring break, MTV was filming and hosting the party in Panama City Beach. MTV Cribs filmed part of the show on the Emerald Coast. The All-American Rejects had camera crews come over and showcase their house. Many celebrities do come to the Emerald Coast! Its not out of the question to see a famous face. 654-LIMO knows how to party! Many bars and restaurants are spread out in Destin. Many people do not like to drive if the night involves a party. 654-LIMO has great limousines that are the life of the road! There are many different limo's to choose from. The vehicles and the service will surely impress anyone. The beach can damage hair. People spend hundreds of dollars on hair coloring and styling each year. The beach does not help maintain healthy hair. The sun and salt water can strip away expensive hair coloring. Beachgoers that are concerned with keeping healthy hair should use a strong conditioner before and after the beach. Snorkeling coming to Navarre Beach! The old fishing pier is getting demolished and will be used for an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico. The Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council is helping to fund the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary. The reef is planned to be 300 feet off the shore. The reef area would encompass 263-foot-by-71-foot area. The top of each reef cluster will be about six feet below the surface. The coming attraction would be completed between 2011 and 2012. Beach Restoration is going to the Supreme Court. Two groups formed in 2004 to stop beach restoration. The groups claimed that beach restoration took away rights of property owners allowing private beaches to become public. The groups filed suit and lost in the Florida Supreme Court. The issue has now gone to the Supreme Court. The case is expected to be heard by February 2010. The case will affect beach restoration around the country. Many visitors will be on the Emerald Coast to celebrate the 4th of July. The beaches and waters will be very busy! There are quite a few fireworks displays to choose from. Destin has many locations for viewing multiple displays. Whether its the beach or the fireworks plan ahead and leave early! ESPN2 was on the Emerald Coast! The television channel ESPN2 recently filmed a show featuring the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort along with lots of fishing. The show that did the feature is called "Wanna Go Fishing?" The Gulf of Mexico has been known for producing some great fishing and that has been recognized a few times on the television. June Grass is here along with a new season. The Okaloosa Island is where most of the June Grass is prevalent. The waters in Destin have been staying pretty clear. Summer is here, and both air and water temperatures have increased. Afternoon thunderstorms will be more frequent and beachgoers should check the radar periodically. Some Crystal Beach residents are not happy with the sand. Recently, there has been some black streaks in the sand on Crystal Beach. Some residents think the beach restoration is to blame. The "black sand" is not uncommon. The sand is being tested to make sure its natural. The "black sand" has been witnessed on other beaches along the Emerald Coast in the past. Shark Saturday is coming soon! For 2009, a famous fish species will replace Red Snapper in the Destin Fishing Rodeo. Red Snapper season closes in August and fishermen decided to replace snapper with shark. Each boat will be allowed to bring in one shark per boat. The fish must weigh 100 pounds to enter. Only on Saturday will sharks be brought back to the docks. Pensacola is planning aritificial reefs. Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties will be uniting to build artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. Rubble from both the Navarre Pier and the Bob Sikes Bridge will be used to build the reefs. The Emerald Coast is a great place for Father's Day. A fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico is a great plan for the family. The Gulf of Mexico is typically calm in the month of June which, makes it safe to plan a fishing trip for the day. Along with fishing, there is also great golf, boating and beaches to enjoy! Helen Back is on the map! Helen Back is a popular bar on Okaloosa Island. Recently, Esquire Magazine chose Helen Back as one of the "Best Bars in America". The feature runs in the June issue. Fort Walton Beach has been put in the same league as Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and San Francisco. The Pizzeria is open in Seaside! Cafe Spiazza below Bud 'n Alley's is now The Pizzeria. The owners have brought the art of pizza making in Napoli, Italy to Seaside. The preparation of the pizza's adhere to the standards of the Vera Pizza Napoletana Organization. The VPN has promoted the art of pizza making for more than 200 years. Beaches may not see financial support needed from the state. The Florida Legislature's new budget eliminated $1.2 million in state funding for Destin and Okaloosa Island beach restoration. The Tourist Development Council's budget for the $20 million needed comes from state grants, county bed taxes and special assessment on waterfront landowners. The TDC may cut back on things such as, the shuttle service between Destin and Fort Walton Beach. Cutting the shuttle service would save $282 thousand. Nightown is back! The club was closed due to unsure plans for the future. The owner considered giving the club new hands. Instead, the club got rennovations and reopened to celebrate its milestone of 30 years! Many visitors come to the Emerald Coast for Memorial weekend. That is just a warm up for the fun that is to be had the following weekend! Billy Bowlegs is growing in popularity every year. Its a great festival for everyone! Most of the excitement takes place on the water where hundreds of boats anchor for the festival in front of the Fort Walton Beach Landing. Harbor dredging is behind schedule. The Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S.. Army Corps of Engineers approved the City of Destin's plan to dredge 6,000 to 7,000 cubic yards of sand from the channel. The sand is to be transferred back on to Norriego Point. The dregde arrived March 17th, but everything from weather delays to mechanical delays have set the project back. Colorado State University recently revised down the expectations for the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hurricane Season 2009 has already seen one tropical depression. The storm developed before the start of the season. Colorado State University changed their expectations for 2009. Now there is to be 12 named storms. Six of them becoming hurricanes with two becoming major. Both locals and residents should frequently watch the Tropical Update on The Weather Channel for updates. Could a floating parking garage help Pensacola Beach parking? A Gulf Breeze Naval architect wants to construct a floating parking garage that would give the parking problem on Pensacola Beach some relief. The parking garage would be built on old barges that could easily be relocated to other areas in need of extra parking by the water. The floating parking garage would offer 600 new spaces. The cost of the project would cost between $4.8 and $7.2 million. A new ordinance was passed on Panama City Beach. Both businesses and homes along the beach in Bay County will have 3 and a half years to install sea turtle friendly lights on their property. Bright lights on the beach disorient baby sea turtles after they hatch and cause them to move toward the lights instead of the water. Jellyfish were terrible in 2008! 2009 will hopefully not be a repeat of 2008's invasion of jellyfish. Summer of 2008 was a painful summer for anyone who ventured out into the Gulf of Mexico. So far, the jellyfish are not present. Some people think the high surf from tropical systems moving through the gulf was the reason for so many jellies. The Beach Walk Cafe is located right on the beach! Panama City's Firefly Restaurant is offering a Mother's Day Lunch that starts at 12. Both The Beach Walk Cafe and Firefly are great places to take mothers and "wow" them! Walton County is moving forward with beach renourishment. As Okaloosa County fights lawsuits that has brought beach renourishment to a halt, Walton County is trying to get federal help. The Tourist Develoment Council of Walton County has met with congressional committees to find ways of funding and keeping the renourishment project as a federal one. Walton County TDC is pursuing the federal avenue because the federal government will fund 50 percent of the project and partner on the project for 50 years. Destin was featured on NBC! NBC recently did a 4-day series called "Sea Changes". The story featured Destin, Florida's commercial fishing, but included a global perspective on overfishing. Red Snapper was a focus of the series. Red Snapper along with other fish species have new fishing regulations as part of a conservation effort. Hurricane season is almost here! The 2009 hurricane season is just around the corner. Each year meteorologists make predictions on how many storms there may be during the season. The predictions include number of storms, how many become hurricanes and how many are major. According to Accuweather, the 2009 season might see 13 named storms, eight becoming hurricanes and two hurricanes being major storms. The Emerald Coast can be viewed on web cams! There are many webcams located on hotels and buildings along the Emerald Coast. Okaloosa Island has two streaming beach cams. Anglers Beachside Grill has a webcam for beach weddings, but the camera allows visitors away from the area to get a live view of the beach. Also, The Breakers Condominiums have a live beach cam too! The Angers beach cam can be viewed at www.anglersbeachsidegrill.net. The Breakers web cam can be found by google searching Breakers Condominium, which is on Okaloosa Island. The festival has a great turnout due to is popularity locally. Developers of Grand Boulevard are facing a lawsuit. The Howard Group is facing a lawsuit due to the hotel being developed in the Grand Boulevard is too tall according to The Presidents Council. The hotel was going to be 14 stories, but was downsized to 11 stories. The Howard Group is being sued because the building violates the county's 50-foot, four-story height restriction, didn't undergo the hearings required of a major development and violates Walton County's growth management plan. Panama City Beaches will be helping sea turtles! Businesses on the beaches of Panama City have till May1, 2010 to have floodlights replaced with Turtle friendly lights. All other lighting along beach front property would have to do the same by May 1, 2013. Bright lights on the beaches at night affect baby sea turtles and their journey to the Gulf of Mexico. The lights can disorientate baby turtles and lead them away from the water where they will not survive. Some species of sea turtles are endangered. After a storm and windy conditions, power went out along Old Hwy 98. When the power came back on, a surge caused a spark that caught napkins on fire. The structure did have some bad damage from the fire. The upstairs will take some time to rebuild, but the downstairs beach bar could be open soon! The Shrimp Shack in Seaside is open! The Shrimp Shack is gaining it's popularity pretty quick! The restaurant took over the location of the Roly Poly sandwich shop in February. The great seafood is also accompanied with a relaxed environment. Beachgoers can walk up and get some great seafood during the day, or grab dinner in the evening. The Shrimp Shack is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. till 9 p.m. Nightown is closed! Nightown originally opened in 1979. The night club has been a local hot spot for offering night life! Owner Bob Bonezzi is not sure if he will remain the owner or give the club a new owner. New ideas and plans are being discussed currently. Bonezzi also owns The Swamp and Howl at the Moon on Okaloosa Island. Gulf Coast's Annual Seabreeze Jazz Festival has a new home! The Seabreeze Jazz Festival will now take place in Pier Park on Panama City Beach. The new location offers more space for the festival that has been growing fast in popularity! Pier Park offers many restaurants, a close location to the beach and a clean environment for a large audience. The festival takes place April 16th-19th. Festival information and details can be found at www.seabreezejazzfestival.com. The Destin Harbor is being dredged now! The harbor was getting extremely shallow from the build up of sand. Boats were hitting bottom as they entered and exited the harbor. The shallow was a major threat to boat captains because commerce could have came to a stop! Currently, the harbor is being dredged and 6,000 to 7,000 cubic feet of sand will be put on Norriego Point. Boaters are urged to cruise slowly and avoid making any wake that may disturb the operation. The toll to Pensacola Beach almost went up! The toll that remains $1 almost doubled to $2! Pensacola Beach has been very crowded during the weekends. Parking at the public beach access has been almost impossible. The owner of Innerlight Surf Shop, Yancy Spencer, gives a surf and beach report daily that is very helpful to beachgoers on Pensacola Beach. From Destin to Panama City, there has been a high number of beachgoers! The beaches during St. Patty's day were absolutely chaotic in some places. MTV was a big attraction out on the beaches of Panama City! The number of students on break has dramatically dropped for the week from 600,000 to 28,000. More spring breakers will be on the way in another week with Louisiana and many public schools going on break! Tim Creehan filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Creehan's restaurants The Copper Grill and Bluz Bar and Grill will not open again. Creehan originally planned to close the restaurants temporarily till business picked up. The tough times took its toll on him as well.. Creehan has all his focus on his roots with the Beach Walk Cafe. Its a fresh start for him! The properties will be turned over to a trustee to convert them to cash and divide the amount among creditors. Lifeguards are back on the beaches everywhere! The waters have been pretty calm lately and the guards haven't been too busy to start the season off. During past spring breaks there have been a few drownings due to rough conditions on the beaches. Swimmers should always excersize great caution anytime when entering the Gulf of Mexico! Walton County may see a new line in the sand for homeowners! The Coastal Construction Control Line is being reestablished. A line will be drawn using a numerical model that determines probable erosion. The reestablishment will protect $150 billion worth of property along the beaches, as well as marine habitats. Around 96 properties will be affected by the change that was first drawn out in 1975 and a recent study was conducted that will now change it. State Road 399 is back open! 399 is a very scenic drive along the beach that connects Navarre and Pensacola beaches. The road has been closed since the storms of 2004 and 2005. Many locals and visitors have been anticipating the reopening! The first cobia has been caught for 2009! The HarborWalk Marina Destin Cobia Tournament has kicked off and the first cobia was caught off the beaches of Navarre. The cobia weighed in at 42 pounds. Many fishing boats can now be seen just off the beaches searching for cobia. The tournament will run till May 8th. Fishermen looking to register for the tournament can get signed up at the HarborWalk Marina or at www.destincobiatournament.com. With warmer temperatures the beaches begin to have more familiar sights again. Beach chairs and umbrellas return to the sand. The boats of the harbor return to the Gulf in search of fish species returning to warmer waters. Suntans and sunburns are more frequent on beach goers. The Grog March is on St. Patty's Day! The Grog March takes place on St. Patrick's Day. Many locals and area visitors gather on the harbor and hit every stop from KJ's to the Lucky Snapper. The Grog March finishes at Maguire's Irish Pub, which will be the main event for the evening! Emerald Coast Coffee has the best view! Emerald Coast Coffee located at Harborwalk Village has one amazing view of the harbor, the pass and the gulf! The view is not the only great thing. The coffee is great along with the menu! The Cubano is one great sandwich! The hours are also great. ECC is open Monday to Friday at 6;30 a.m. till 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday ECC opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. There's free wi-fi to go with the coffee and great view! TIm Creehan is back again! The Beach Walk Cafe is open at Henderson Beach as the Beach Walk Cafe at Henderson Park Inn. Creehan recently moved out from his original location in the Inn at Crystal Beach. The new location will give Creehan more freedom to offer cooking classes and wine dinners. The new location is much smaller and reservations are a must! The atmosphere is more intimate and toes in the sand dining will be offered as well. Creehan's Copper Grill and Blues will not reopen as planned. The harbor may get dredged soon! The entrance to the harbor is getting very shallow at low-tide. Some boats are bumping bottom as they come to and from the harbor. The Destin City Council will not have to wait for a permit from the Department of Environmental Protection due to the emergency of the situation. Commerce could be shut down due to the sand build up. The city is waiting for approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The city will spend $72,000 on the dredging job. The Summerhouse Restaurant will be back in business. The Summerhouse Restaurant will not reopen as the Summerhouse, but as Merrick's Fish Camp. Alan Laird purchased the structure that was once a local restaurant favorite and a historical landmark. Laird moved the structure on barges out towards Navarre where he has planned to open his new restaurant that will be similar to AJ's. Laird owns the great local hang out known as AJ's. Gas prices are affordable and many spring breakers will be making their way down to the Emerald Coast to let loose! Panama City will be the life of the party! MTV will be on the beaches of Panama City from March 8th till the 22nd. Destin too, will have a lot to offer to all spring breakers! Making reservations ahead of time is highly recommended! The American Volleyball Professionals will be in Panama City the last weekend of March! March 27th till the 29th is when all the top professional volleyball players will hit the white sand to compete! AVP events are very exciting, and Panama City is one of the many stops in the country! The History Channel was in Gulf Breeze to film "UFO Hunters". The show choosed Gulf Breeze because of the many eye witness accounts and sightings of UFO's. Gulf Breeze had many sightings in the late 80's and even had a UFO club. The show will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m on the History Channel. The Red Door Saloon is a new addition to the harbor! Overlooking the Boat House on a hill, the Red Door Saloon was once a fish camp in the early 1900's. Now, the historical landmark is going to carry on a piece of Destin's history as a bar. St. Patrick's Day on the Emerald Coast is a blast! Maguire's Irish Pub and Pat O'briens will be the hot spots on the Emerald Coast to celebrate St. Patty's Day. Both locations are at the foot of the Destin Bridge and 2009 should be better than ever! Panama City Beach allows dogs! Across the street from Pier Park is the Panama City Beach Pier. West of the pier is where the "dog beach" is located. The area is a 400 foot stretch of beach with signs marking the boundary! South Walton County is another place to take your dog for an early morning or late afternoon stroll! Floating Condos may come to the Destin Harbor! A floating condo will be constructed in Louisiana. The floating condo will be made of barges and will be 600 feet by 108 feet. The floating condo will have 200 units, restaurants, lounges, a deli, spas, pools, gym, walking track and a 18 hole chipping putting golf course! The condo may float its way to the Emerald Coast! Planning ahead is a great idea!!! The beaches on Okaloosa Island are great for getting a big blanket and laying on the beach with your loved one. The dunes in particular are great for watching stars due to the low amount of lights in the area. State Farm is is dropping Florida customers! Nearly one million customers will be affected by State Farm pulling out of Florida. Customers will have time and notice to switch providers. State Farms financial condition and rising costs are why policies are being discontinued. There are almost 25 other providers of homeowners insurance in Florida. Mardi Gras is a great time on the Emerald Coast! The Pensacola Mardi Gras Parade takes place February 21 at 2 p.m. in downtown Pensacola. Parade goers can expect a big turnout due to the popularity of the festive weekend in Pensacola. The Sandestin Resort and Harbor Walk will also be great places to enjoy Mardi Gras on the Emerald Coast! Pompano Joe's is underway with many developments! The parking lot is half way layed with cement and coming along very quickly! The exact finish date is not known, but construction is moving very quick! The Pompano Joe's restaurant has a new deck being built out front that will host live music and be accompanied by an outside bar! There is more to come... The Beachwalk Cafe is closing! Tim Creehan recently closed his restaurants temporarily due to the tough economic times. The Inn at Crystal Beach is not allowing the Beachwalk Cafe to reopen in its original location due to Creehan's request to close the restaurant an additional month. The Beachwalk Cafe will reopen after the first of March at the Great Events Center behind the Community Bank west of Emerald Coast Parkway and Holiday Road. Snow birds come down to escape the winter conditions in places like Canada, Minnesota, Montana and Michigan. WestJet may come to the Northwest Florida Regional Airport! With many snowbirds coming to the Emerald Coast, a new airline may fly into the Northwest Florida Regional Airport depending on the demand for the air service. If convinced, WestJet would have a direct flight from Toronto to Northwest Florida saving many snowbirds a long drive. A campaign is being carried out this snowbird season to determine the demand for the flight. Emerald Coast Coffee is one of many great coffee shops on the Emerald Coast! Emerald Coast Coffee is a new addition to Harbor Walk on the Destin Harbor. The coffee shop is very inviting with a great relaxing atmoshere and view. Along with great coffee and sandwiches, free wi-fi is offered. Destin has the best beaches according to Southern Living Magazine. Southern Living Magazine's Reader's Choice Awards rated Destin 10th for Best Weekend Getaway, 9th for Best City, 3rd for the Best Family Destination and 1st for the Best Beach! The Emerald Coast is recognized as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the United States and even the World! Mako Sharks have been seen by local fishermen just off the coast of Destin beaches. One of the Mako encounters was with a specimen estimated to be 15 feet long. The fishermen that encountered the large Mako reported that the shark attacked a dolphin and later consumed it. Two years ago, a similar situation was witnessed off the beaches of Navarre during spring months. Makos are common during spring months when lots of fish are migrating off the Emerald Coast. The East Pass may get dredged again! Boats coming out of the East Pass are having difficulty with shallow water created by sand build-up from the constant water movement. Many charters are having to idle with caution especially, during low-tide because parts of the East Pass are becoming very shallow. Some Of The News Covered:Baytowne in the Sandestin resort brought in a crowd, but it was Harborwalk that took the cake for New Years! The Harborwalk had a great turnout for its first New Years celebration. With many places to choose from, crowds were spread out. Along with new bars on the harbor, it was the fireworks display and the ball drop that everyone was talking about. Tim Creehan has decided to close his restaurants. Tim Creehan decided to close BeachWalk Cafe, Copper Grill and Bluz Grill and Bar for the slow months due to a slow economy. The businesses are planned to reopen for Spring 2009! Close to 100 employees were affected. A new four-star Hilton resort will be coming to Okaloosa Island. The new Hilton will be located across Highway 98 from Beasley Park on the sound-side. Ground will break in February and construction will last for 15 months. The development is expected to be completed by May 15, 2010. Developers are currently waiting for a permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Pompano Joe's parking lot is well underway with construction. Parking is limited for Pompano Joe's, but not for much longer. Half of the parking lot is expected to be completed by the end of February and be open for parking! The ice skating rink in Baytowne is still open till February! The ice rink in Baytowne is averaging 150 ice skaters a day. The hours of operation are 4 till 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. 11 till 10 on Saturday. Sunday from noon till 6 p.m. The cost to ice skate is $10 per person. Dogs may soon be allowed into restaurants in Okaloosa County. An ordinance may be passed that allows dogs into permitted restaurants with designated outdoor portions. Angler's Beachside Grill will work with the county to develop what will be called the Yappy Hour Act. The Gulf Breeze Zoo may get a financial break. The zoo has received $125,000 from the Santa Rosa County Commission and another $125,000 from Escambia County. The zoo may see another $100,000 from an owner of a private zoo in Connecticut. Some Of The News Covered:Red snapper season may get shorter! Currently red snapper season is from April 15 to October 31. The season may be shortened by two more months from June 1 to September 31. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission believes red snapper are overfished and shortening the fishing season will reduce the harvest of the fish and help rebuild populations. New Years on the Emerald Coast for 2009 will be another blast! The Baytowne Village in the Sandestin Resort will be the center of attention for ringing in 2009. Lots of entertainment will be present along with crowds. 2008 was great, but 2009 may be that much better! Making early reservations are highly recommended. Navarre Beach will be rebuilding the fishing pier! Recently, the state approved the new permit for a new fishing pier to be rebuilt on Navarre Beach. The new pier would extend 1,500 feet. The old pier was 900 feet and has been unfishable since the Hurricanes in 2004 that damaged it heavily. The new pier is estimated to cost $8 million which, will be covered by FEMA. The first two weeks of December are two of the slowest weeks. Many rental properties, hotels and restaurants are running great specials. There is a lot of opportunity to save big for visitors coming to the Emerald Coast the next two weeks. New artificial reef regulations have fishing captains worried on the Destin Harbor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Jacksonville wants to change the thickness requred for metal on artificial reefs to half of an inch to prevent the metal from breaking and washing up on local beaches. A lot of artificial reefs created would not meet the regulations. More metal would mean higher prices to create reefs and more difficulty transporting it into the gulf. The artificial reefs provide structure for fish species and help underwater ecosystems flourish. The Destin City Council is trying to transfer the supervision of the Emerald Coast's artificial reefs from Jacksonville to Mobile, Al. Mobile does not support the half-inch rule. Flounder fishing is at its peak here on the Emerald Coast. There are reports of flounder being caught in high numbers in the East Pass of Destin. Flounder are very good to eat and a local favorite. Also, sheepshead are on the move and take more skill to catch than flounder. Fort Pickens is under construction. The road to Fort Pickens is under construction and parts of the major historical attraction will be closed. Fort Pickens is a famous landmark on Pensacola Beach and names like Geronimo were once help captive there. The fort is a great learning experience for anyone and can be an adventurous experience. Visitors can expect all the closed areas to reopen April of 2009. More than a dozen parks in Florida are at risk for closing. Deer Lake Park might be one of the parks to close indefinitely. Deer Lake is one of the rare coastal dune lakes on the 26 mile Walton County coastline. Governor Charlie Christ directed all state agencies to cut 10 percent from proposed budgets of 2009-10. The cuts must be approved first, and if approved parks would start closing in July 2009. T.C's Front Porch is Navarre's new place to go! T.C's has not been open for long, but has already attracted many local residents with some great local seafood. T.C's is located across Hwy 98 from the Navarre Bridge.
