Some Of The News Covered:Billy Bowlegs had a great turnout! Each year Billy Bowlegs gets bigger and bigger! For 2009, many locals agreed the turnout was impressive. The festival experienced sunny skies and great weather. The festival follows Memorial weekend which, starts off the summer with a bang! Father's Day is coming up! The Emerald Coast is a great place for Father's Day. A fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico is a great plan for the family. The Gulf of Mexico is typically calm in the month of June which, makes it safe to plan a fishing trip for the day. Along with fishing, there is also great golf, boating and beaches to enjoy! Helen Back is on the map! Helen Back is a popular bar on Okaloosa Island. Recently, Esquire Magazine chose Helen Back as one of the "Best Bars in America". The feature runs in the June issue. Fort Walton Beach has been put in the same league as Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and San Francisco. The Pizzeria is open in Seaside! Cafe Spiazza below Bud 'n Alley's is now The Pizzeria. The owners have brought the art of pizza making in Napoli, Italy to Seaside. The preparation of the pizza's adhere to the standards of the Vera Pizza Napoletana Organization. The VPN has promoted the art of pizza making for more than 200 years. Beaches may not see financial support needed from the state. The Florida Legislature's new budget eliminated $1.2 million in state funding for Destin and Okaloosa Island beach restoration. The Tourist Development Council's budget for the $20 million needed comes from state grants, county bed taxes and special assessment on waterfront landowners. The TDC may cut back on things such as, the shuttle service between Destin and Fort Walton Beach. Cutting the shuttle service would save $282 thousand. Nightown is back! The club was closed due to unsure plans for the future. The owner considered giving the club new hands. Instead, the club got rennovations and reopened to celebrate its milestone of 30 years! Many visitors come to the Emerald Coast for Memorial weekend. That is just a warm up for the fun that is to be had the following weekend! Billy Bowlegs is growing in popularity every year. Its a great festival for everyone! Most of the excitement takes place on the water where hundreds of boats anchor for the festival in front of the Fort Walton Beach Landing. Harbor dredging is behind schedule. The Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S.. Army Corps of Engineers approved the City of Destin's plan to dredge 6,000 to 7,000 cubic yards of sand from the channel. The sand is to be transferred back on to Norriego Point. The dregde arrived March 17th, but everything from weather delays to mechanical delays have set the project back. Colorado State University recently revised down the expectations for the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hurricane Season 2009 has already seen one tropical depression. The storm developed before the start of the season. Colorado State University changed their expectations for 2009. Now there is to be 12 named storms. Six of them becoming hurricanes with two becoming major. Both locals and residents should frequently watch the Tropical Update on The Weather Channel for updates. Could a floating parking garage help Pensacola Beach parking? A Gulf Breeze Naval architect wants to construct a floating parking garage that would give the parking problem on Pensacola Beach some relief. The parking garage would be built on old barges that could easily be relocated to other areas in need of extra parking by the water. The floating parking garage would offer 600 new spaces. The cost of the project would cost between $4.8 and $7.2 million. A new ordinance was passed on Panama City Beach. Both businesses and homes along the beach in Bay County will have 3 and a half years to install sea turtle friendly lights on their property. Bright lights on the beach disorient baby sea turtles after they hatch and cause them to move toward the lights instead of the water. Jellyfish were terrible in 2008! 2009 will hopefully not be a repeat of 2008's invasion of jellyfish. Summer of 2008 was a painful summer for anyone who ventured out into the Gulf of Mexico. So far, the jellyfish are not present. Some people think the high surf from tropical systems moving through the gulf was the reason for so many jellies.
