Norriego Point might get some armor! The City of Destin has spent a lot of money trying to keep sand out of the harbor. Much of the sand that builds up in the harbor is from the erosion of Norriego Point. The Destin City Council is thinking of spending $7.5 million to armor Norriego Point with either rocks or metal sheets. Erosion is a long-term problem and the city is thinking of a long-term solution.

Pensacola is rich with history! Recently, a stone cannon ball, a bright green ceramic dish piece and a chicken bone were recovered from a shipwreck in the Pensacola Bay. For the past three years University of West Florida students have been recovering artifacts from the Emanuel Point II. The ship is part of a fleet that was commanded by Pensacola's founder, Don Tristan de Luna.

The Panama City International Airport is on schedule. With 10 months to go, the Panama City International Airport is 61 percent complete. Many residents along the Emerald Coast are anticipating the airport's completion. The airport has encountered obstacles with the Federal Avaition Administration and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The Pensacola International Billfish Tournament saw fewer competitors. For 2009, there was only 45 boats that competed in the fishing tournament. The economy has affected a lot fishing from Panama City to Pensacola. In 2007, the Pensacola fishing tournament had aound 90 boats competing for the trophy billfish. Many boat captains are having to include gas prices and traveling into thier fishing strategy.

Leave No Trace is Walton County's new ordinance. Many beachgoers leave behind tents, chairs and other objects on the beach. The items were once tagged to remind property owners to take items with them off the beach. Walton County passed a new ordinance called Leave No Trace. Objects left on the beach will be tagged and given 24 hours to be removed. If the object is not removed the county will take up the object and hold it for 48 hours before being discarded.

The 4th was a blowout! The weather was great! The beaches, bars, restaurant and waters were busy! For 2009, there was a lot of firework displays! Many locals were impressed with the displays. After the fireworks, many people went to the beach to shoot off their own display.

MTV Cribs was on the Emerald Coast! During spring break, MTV was filming and hosting the party in Panama City Beach. MTV Cribs filmed part of the show on the Emerald Coast. The All-American Rejects had camera crews come over and showcase their house. Many celebrities do come to the Emerald Coast! Its not out of the question to see a famous face.

654-LIMO knows how to party! Many bars and restaurants are spread out in Destin. Many people do not like to drive if the night involves a party. 654-LIMO has great limousines that are the life of the road! There are many different limo's to choose from. The vehicles and the service will surely impress anyone.

The beach can damage hair. People spend hundreds of dollars on hair coloring and styling each year. The beach does not help maintain healthy hair. The sun and salt water can strip away expensive hair coloring. Beachgoers that are concerned with keeping healthy hair should use a strong conditioner before and after the beach.

Snorkeling coming to Navarre Beach! The old fishing pier is getting demolished and will be used for an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico. The Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council is helping to fund the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary. The reef is planned to be 300 feet off the shore. The reef area would encompass 263-foot-by-71-foot area. The top of each reef cluster will be about six feet below the surface. The coming attraction would be completed between 2011 and 2012.

Beach Restoration is going to the Supreme Court. Two groups formed in 2004 to stop beach restoration. The groups claimed that beach restoration took away rights of property owners allowing private beaches to become public. The groups filed suit and lost in the Florida Supreme Court. The issue has now gone to the Supreme Court. The case is expected to be heard by February 2010. The case will affect beach restoration around the country.

4th of July on the Emerald Coast is a blast! Many visitors will be on the Emerald Coast to celebrate the 4th of July. The beaches and waters will be very busy! There are quite a few fireworks displays to choose from. Destin has many locations for viewing multiple displays. Whether its the beach or the fireworks plan ahead and leave early!

ESPN2 was on the Emerald Coast! The television channel ESPN2 recently filmed a show featuring the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort along with lots of fishing. The show that did the feature is called "Wanna Go Fishing?" The Gulf of Mexico has been known for producing some great fishing and that has been recognized a few times on the television.

June Grass is here along with a new season. The Okaloosa Island is where most of the June Grass is prevalent. The waters in Destin have been staying pretty clear. Summer is here, and both air and water temperatures have increased. Afternoon thunderstorms will be more frequent and beachgoers should check the radar periodically.

Some Crystal Beach residents are not happy with the sand. Recently, there has been some black streaks in the sand on Crystal Beach. Some residents think the beach restoration is to blame. The "black sand" is not uncommon. The sand is being tested to make sure its natural. The "black sand" has been witnessed on other beaches along the Emerald Coast in the past.

Shark Saturday is coming soon! For 2009, a famous fish species will replace Red Snapper in the Destin Fishing Rodeo. Red Snapper season closes in August and fishermen decided to replace snapper with shark. Each boat will be allowed to bring in one shark per boat. The fish must weigh 100 pounds to enter. Only on Saturday will sharks be brought back to the docks.

Pensacola is planning aritificial reefs. Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties will be uniting to build artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. Rubble from both the Navarre Pier and the Bob Sikes Bridge will be used to build the reefs. Artificial reefs are great for creating new underwater habitats that will boost marine life.
