Okaloosa County is trying to land Southwest! Southwest Airlines is looking to choose an area airport. Bay County's new airport is working hard to attract the carrier with the backing of the St. Joe Company offering $10 million. With Okaloosa County being in the middle it could bring in business from both Bay and Escambia County. The Walton County Tourist Development Council is not backing any airport until Southwest has chosen an airport.

Fishing is getting good! Recently, sailfish were spotted from the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier. The sailfish along with king mackerel could be seen feeding at the end of the pier. Flounder and redfish are both being caught heavily by anglers. The Destin Fishing Rodeo begins in October!

The Whales Tail is open! The Whales Tail caught fire in the spring of this year. The upstairs restaurant is still closed, but the beach bar is open for business. Pompano Joe's now has a front deck that offers live music nightly along with a tiki bar. The new deck also offers a great viewing point for the amazing sunsets to come!

The Navarre Pass may have a chance! In 1965 the Navarre Pass was opened. Two months later it was filled in by Hurricane Betsy. The pass may open now. Some Of The News Covered:

Labor Day weekend was a blast! The Emerald Coast had many visitors for the holiday weekend. Everywhere along the beach seemed to be busy with people soaking up the last getaway for the summer. Crab Island had a large turnout as always. The beaches were by no means desolate. Restaurants and bars stayed very busy when the beaches cleared for the evening. A great holiday weekend overall!

The waters have cleared! The beaches along the Emerald Coast seem free of june grass! The water temperature is in the low 80's. There are some jellyfish present, but the "jellies" are large and easy to spot. Some high surf is expected in the next 5 days and beachgoers should exercise high caution.

Destin may have ownership of Norriego Point. Okaloosa County currently owns Norriego Point. The City of Destin wants full control of Norriego to do more repairs. In the past 20 years some 600,000 cubic yards of sand has drifted away. Destin officials are planning to buffer up Norriego Point with a project that will cost between $5.5 and $7.2 million. The project will slow erosion and preserve Norriego Point as a recreational area.

Traffic violators will pay more! A new state law went into effect that allows counties to double a $15 surcharge on traffic violations to help cover rising court costs. When traveling to the Emerald Coast, drivers should always do the speed limit. Much of US Hwy 98 is patrolled heavily by police, and the speed limit is strictly enforced.
